Conflict Mediation

Conflict mediation programs create a safe school environment, build a sense of ownership and pride, and develop character. The programs teach conflict resolution and develop a strong school culture through cross-grade student relationships.

Conflict Managers on the Playground - grades 3-6

This 6-hour training involves learning and practicing active communication skills including listening, restating, reflecting, questioning, empathy, and expressing feelings.

It teaches a prescribed script based on two conflict managers working with two disputants to solve their problem. Practice is included in the training. The level of skill work based on age is the difference between the two trainings above.

Bridges to Safety

Bridges to Safety - grades 4-8

The Bridges to Safety training enriches the Conflict Manager on the Playground program so that trained students are prepared to do the character education lessons in Bridges to Safety with younger students in the school. One hour of the six hours of training is spent helping the on-site coordinator devise an implementation plan for Bridges to Safety.

Philosophy behind Bridges to Safety

Bridges to Safety enables younger students to get to know their conflict managers, and they are then more likely to use the program. Anecdotal evidence shows that initially managers and mediators have trouble getting business. This is exactly why we developed BTS – to give the students a way to introduce themselves to their peers in a non-threatening way.
